Chuanxiong
川芎
Chuanxiong (lat. Ligusticum chuanxiong) is a cultivated plant of the genus Ligusticum in the
family Umbelliferae.
Taste, Characteristic, and Meridian
Bitter, warm by nature. It returns to the liver and
gallbladder meridians.
Value in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Activates qi and releases stagnation of emotions, dispells wind and dries
dampness, promotes blood circulation, and relieves pain. It is used for treating headache and dizziness caused by wind-cold, pain in the ribs, abdominal pain, arthritis (aggravated by cold), muscle spasm, amenorrhea, obstructed labor, post-partum stasis and pain, and abscesses.
